Hunter Gatherer Gardener
At The Grey Area Nursery, our Hunter Gardener Gatherer Wānanga was established with the support of Te Pūtahitanga to help reconnect whānau with the whenua, kai, and traditional ways of living.
While the programme was supported into form, this has always been our way of life. Through balance, respect, and koha, we continue this legacy every day.
Led by Rawiri Ra Clay, whose life has been shaped by the ngahere, moana, and maara kai, the wānanga offers hands on experiences in hunting, gathering, gardening, and home butchery.
Participants learn to harvest kai moana, grow and propagate food, explore aquaculture, and understand the deeper relationship between people and the land.
Grounded in generations of knowledge and lived practice, this kaupapa supports food sovereignty, strengthens connection, and empowers whānau to provide for themselves and future generations.
