Our Story
Located in Kaiata, The Grey Area Nursery specializes in cultivating and distributing a diverse selection of New Zealand Natives, Fruit Trees, and Ornamental plants for the public.
Established in 2020 from humble beginnings on previously undeveloped farmland, Rawiri, our Nursery operator, envisioned creating a community-centric Native Plant Nursery. Our mission is to supply fresh fruit, vegetables, and native plants while fostering education, innovation, and opportunities for our local community, or Hapori.
Presently, The Grey Area Nursery caters to the needs of the local community by offering an extensive variety of New Zealand Natives and Fruit Trees. We actively engage with local schools (Kura), community groups, and businesses to promote education and innovation in the Grey/Westland & Buller Regions.
Dedicated to enriching our customers' outdoor spaces and enhancing land productivity, we specialize in utilizing Native New Zealand Plants, Trees, and Fruit Trees. Our commitment extends to providing expert guidance, ongoing assistance, and premium planting products.
Our overarching vision is to inspire future generations to revitalize New Zealand's Native Land through education, innovation, and propagation. As we evolve and expand, we invite you to visit The Nursery, conveniently located at 495 State Highway 7, Kaiata.

About our Founder
Meet Ra Clay, owner and kaitiaki of The Grey Area Nursery, located in Kaiata just outside Greymouth.
A proud West Coaster, Ra’s deep connection to the whenua comes from generations of whakapapa and a lifetime spent living from and alongside the land.
From an early age, the ngahere, moana, and maara kai shaped his path, inspiring a commitment to protecting and nurturing the natural environment. The Grey Area Nursery reflects this dedication, not simply as a nursery, but as an expression of his values, his whānau, and his responsibility to the land.
Ra’s vision is to create a thriving sanctuary where native plants flourish, knowledge is shared, and future generations remain connected to the whenua that sustains them.
